Lacy Hall
Lacy Hall was built to provide a modern, flexible shop space close to central Grounds to serve the students of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Because of the existence of the building, students are able to explore horizons they may have never known existed. |
Located across from the Slaughter Recreation Center, Lacy Hall provides the opportunity for students and faculty to work side by side on projects such as Solar Car, Hoos' Mining, Hoos' Flying, and all projects related to Virginia Motorsports.
The funding for Lacy Hall was generously provided by Linwood A Lacy, Jr. A chemical engineering graduate of 1967, Mr. Lacy saw the opportunity for growth in experiential learning near Central Grounds. His gifts allowed for the construction of Lacy Hall and the fruition of our dreams of mud, sweat, and steel.
The third floor of Lacy Hall provides a plethora of different tools and machines for wood and metal processing, which enable students and faculty to work on these projects. Frequently used machines are the YCM and Prototrak CNC mills, OMAX waterjet cutter, horizontal bandsaw, TIG and MIG welders, and the Haas CNC lathe.
Not only does Lacy Hall provide a wide variety of machines and tools for working on academic projects, it also provides a workspace for Virginia Motorsports to draft and simulate models of various parts before manufacture. This environment enables team members to experience the full union of design and fabrication.
Virginia Motorsports also strives to create an accepting space for not only our own members, but also other students who may be stepping into Lacy Hall for the first time. As one of the most active clubs in the building, we are often the first to welcome visitors and students alike; those coming to utilize familiar machinery, as well as those first entering a new industrial environment filled with steel and large machines.
